Newcomers

Every year young (and not so young) men decide to become Jesuits and enter novitiates across the country for two years of work, study, and reflection. In the Fall 1996 Issue of Company we presented some of their pictures. Here are some more pictures and short biographies of those who joined last fall.

Patrick Ahern
Chicago

Patrick, 18, graduated from Jesuit High School in Tampa. He's worked in sales at a music store and for five years running he's made trips to live and work with migrant workers in rural Florida. He enjoys juggling, writing prose and poetry, and Japanese martial arts. (New Orleans Province)

Ryan Booth
Dallas, Oreg.

Ryan, 19, studied history at Gonzaga University in Spokane. He has worked as a park ranger At North Cascades National Park in Washington and as a combine operator harvesting peas in that state's Skagit Valley. He enjoys reading, hiking, fly fishing, and acting. (Oregon Province)

Dae Gu, South Korea

Joe, 24, has a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maryland in College Park. He has taught CCD and GED classes and has served as a residential counselor for autistic patients. He enjoys playing video games, baseball, and tennis. (Maryland Province)

Kansas City

Felipe, 29, graduated from Rockhurst High in Kansas City and has an MA in philosophy from Creighton and an MA in religious ed from Loyola University Chicago. He taught at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Ill., and in Guatemala and has worked with gangs in Chicago. (Wisconsin Province).

Winchester, Mass.

Jack, 39, with a JD from the University of Chicago, practiced law for a New Haven firm and taught at the Newton Country Day School in Newton, Mass. He's worked and traveled in France and Germany; he enjoys playing and coaching ice hockey and golf. (New England Province)

Guadalajara, Mexico

Beto (his nickname), 23, studied Spanish and philosophy at San Jose State. He's worked in restaurants and as a bilingual tutor in algebra, social sciences, and English as a Second Language at a San Jose high school. He enjoys swimming, dancing, and reading and writing fiction. (California Province).

Christopher Larsen
Pasadena, Calif.

Christopher, 31, has a BA in math from UC at Irvine. He worked as an engineer, chemist, and manager for an environmental lab. He enjoys touring the United States and was in England on a student exchange program. He enjoys water polo, surfing, and rock climbing. (California Province)

Los Angeles

Tim, 31, has a BA in history from Grinnell College in Iowa. He's studied Church History at Catholic University and theology at Wesley Theological Seminary. He taught at Nativity School in Milwaukee and has done volunteer work with refugees in Texas. (Wisconsin Province)

Rommark Manlimos
Naga City, Philippines

Mark, 24, has a BS in respiratory therapy from the Perpetual Help College of Medicine in the Philippines. He has served as caretaker for elderly women at a board-and-care facility in San Clemente, Calif. His interests range from movies to weight lifting and reading. (California Province)

Santa Ana, El Salvador

Tedy (his nickname), 38, has a Ba in philosophy from the University of San Salvador. He's done community organizing in Berkeley, worked with youth at risk in San Francisco and San Salvador, and designed stages at a Dutch university, a theater in Cuba, and a TV studio in L.A. (California Province)

Montevideo, Minn.

Joshua, 21, spent three years at the University of Arizona at Tucson studying philosophy, religious studies, and Japanese. He took part in a number of political campaigns, was a vocalist in a punk band, and enjoys playing the bass guitar. His favorite author is James Joyce. (California Province)

Detroit

Paul, 44, with a BA in philosophy from Sacred Heart Seminary College in Detroit, served as associate paster and pastor at parishes in Michigan and as consultant for adult formation at the Archdiocese of Detroit. His interests include camping, aikido, and swimming. (Detroit Province)

St. Cloud, Minn.

Aaron, 23, has a BA in political science from UNM in Albuquerque, where he was active at the Newman Center, on a parish council, and with a student outreach program. He's worked as a waiter and has done volunteer work at a crisis center. He enjoys classical music and movies. (New Orleans Province)

Manila, Philippines

Jays, 24, with a BA in philosophy from the University of the Philippines, has also done graduate study in human rights and ethical development in Madrid. He's taught phys ed, history, and literature in the Philippines. He enjoys the guitar and reading Edgar Allan Poe and Shakespeare. (California Province)

Mark White
Washington, D.C.

Mark, 26, with a BA in English from the Catholic University of America, taught at Loyola Academy, the Jesuits' Nativity-style school in Baltimore. He's done volunteer work with a suicide prevention hotline in Washington, D.C. He likes running, reading and exploring cities. (Maryland Province)
