It was like Christmas in April at Company's office as every day during that month we were opening envelopes of photos (over 200 at final tally) arriving from Nigeria, Italy, Micronesia, Argentina, and other locales around the globe as well as from all around the United States.

We congratulate the photographers whose work appears on these pages, we thank all those who submitted, and we invite our readers to view a variety of the Society's works through many eyes.

Ash Wednesday Harlan, Kentucky 1992

Fr. Louis Lipps, SJ, distributes ashes to a parishioner at Holy Trinity Church. Photographer Michael Sarnacki, who has taken many pictures of Detroit Province Jesuits and their works, has been a professional photographer for 25 years. He goes to Sri Lanka this summer to continue a photo project on a Buddhist ceremony.

Alex Grennan, Jesuit High School (Sacramento) class of '97, projects an image of a mural that he and his classmates painted on a gym wall as the class gift to the school. Photographer Joseph Jaszewski graduated this May from Jesuit High and will be studying visual communications with an emphasis on photojournalism at Ohio University.

Fr. George Twigg-Porter, SJ, at the University of San Francisco for over 40 years, also served as San Francisco Fire Department chaplain for 37 years. Here he ministers to a woman injured during a 1993 shooting spree at a San Francisco law firm committed by a revenge-seeking client. Photographer Vince Maggiora, with the San Francisco Chronicle since 1968, has also done freelance work for Associated Press.

Parishioners

These two parishioners of Parroquia Inmaculada Concepción in Sulaco, Yoro, in a very remote area of Honduras, had just received communion from Fr. Robert Voss, SJ, pastor. Photographer Fr. Mike Harter, SJ, one of the novice directors at the novitiate in St. Paul, worked for ten years in communications, on staff at the Review for Religious, and as an editor at America magazine.

Blessing, age 7, a Nigerian, takes care of her brother, Joseph, who was baptized by photographer Fr. Peter Schineller, SJ. Fr. Schineller, currently at the province office in New York, took this picture while serving as regional superior for the Society of Jesus in Nigeria.

Michael Evans, Xavier University (Cincinnati) student and swimmer, graduated from Regis High in Denver, where he was a letterman swimmer for four years. He decided on this tattoo so that he would never forget the influence Jesuits there had on his life. "The cross was part of our team's logo, but the Jesuit motto A.M.D.G. took me almost three years to fully understand," he says. Photographer Greg Rust is on staff at Xavier.
