This shot, taken through the window of a doll repair shop in Rome, "causes one to think about one's end, one's future, and the validity of one's present," according to photographer Kevin Locke, SJ, student of theology and art history at the Jesuits' Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

Isela, who lives in Los Ailes, Mexico, demonstrates how Legos go together while her brother, Octavio, looks on. Photographer Ignatius Sasmita, SJ, took this picture last year when he was helping Mexican scholastics who run pastoral programs at Los Ailes. Just out of the novitiate, he is working at a Jesuit retreat program in Pennsylvania this summer and starts philosophy studies at Fordham University in the fall.

The late Fr. Edward Malatesta, SJ, reads an ancient Chinese scroll at the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History at the University of San Francisco. A biblical scholar and historian who cofounded the institute, Fr. Malatesta had taught at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome before going to the University of San Francisco. Photographer Phil Shermeister, a freelancer in San Francisco, is working on a photo book of the Sierra Nevadas for National Geographic.

Michael Taylor, SJ, reads from the Bible at a Jesuit High School (Sacramento) prayer service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Photographer Joseph Jaszewski, who graduated in May from Jesuit High, goes to Ohio University this fall to study visual communications with an emphasis on photojournalism.

Coach Robert Brown hugs two seniors at the first high school graduation at Loyola High School in Detroit in 1997. Photographer Michael Sarnacki, who has taken many pictures of Detroit Province Jesuits and their works, has been a professional photographer for 25 years. He goes to Sri Lanka this summer to continue a photo project on a Buddhist ceremony.

Jesuits in Prayer Protest

Steve Kelly, SJ, and John Savard, SJ, took part in a prayer protest at the San Francisco Federal Building after the murders of six Jesuits and two co-workers in El Salvador in 1989. Fr. John Quinn, SJ, photographer, is communications coordinator at Jesuit High in Sacramento. He graduated from the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara with an MS in professional photography.
