Harry Porterfield, a Channel 7 news announcer in Chicago, has a popular segment on the 5 O'Clock News, "Someone You Should Know." These are quick profiles of interesting Chicagoans--one day a teacher, another day a business person or an artist--in each case someone holding an interesting position and making a definite contribution to the city. The program's concept was an easy one for Company to adapt for its purposes, considering the number of people, lay and Jesuit, who staff Jesuit parishes, high schools, retreat houses, universities and colleges, and other works across the country. There is a wonderful wealth of experience and personality that the people on these pages (and the thousands of others in the Ignatian world they represent) bring to bear on the tasks necessary to make a parish run smoothly, a team taste victory, a fund-raising drive make its goal, or a student learn something that will stay with him or her for years to come. In truth, it is probably not that frequently during the work week that those employed at Jesuit works stop to consider the kingdom their efforts are helping to construct. That goal can get lost in the shuffle on those days we all have, when what we really want to do is just make it to quitting time and the parking lot. But today is not one of those days; it is time for Company to give a little credit and recognition to some of those who apply themselves to the many tasks the Society has to do. Sitting down? Comfortable? Good! There's someone you should know . . . Page maintained by Richard VandeVelde, SJ, webmaster@companysj.com. Copyright(c) 1999, 2000 Company Magazine.
