Fr. Gary Menard, SJ
Chaplain, Berkeley Fire Department
Time on the job: 3 years
While in studies at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif., Mr. (now Fr.) Menard
(right) rode with the Berkeley Fire Department once a week for a shift; he carried a radio to
respond to big fires at all other times. His job was to help victims of fire and fellow firefighters
cope with the trauma that fires inflict. The work bore a striking resemblance to Jesuit life,
according to Fr. Menard: "Firefighters and paramedics spend years in training, live together in
community, cook for each other, clean house together, and their work consists of going out to
help people." Fr. Menard is now at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City.

homelessÑwhatever is needed.

one parish and administrative assistant for another. She has an MA in church administration from
the School of Divinity at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. She oversees St. Luke's annual
budget of $1 million, works closely with parish committees, and monitors the human resource and
property management functions of the church and the grade school.
Ms. Dorothy Sullivan
Bookkeeper, Jesuit Seminary and Mission Bureau, New York
Time on the job: 53 years
Ms. Sullivan is a friend, counselor, supporter, teacher, and delight for her co-workers. In her
years at the Seminary and Mission Bureau she has seen directors come and go, accounting
systems change, and even Jesuit missions grow to become provinces. "My work has been fruitful
and sometimes nerve-wracking. My favorite time of the year is when the audit is over!"
