Outside of Class
Theology professor Raymond Gawronski, SJ, meets with students outside on a beautiful spring day. Following the Jesuit mode of critical thinking, Marquette students learn about the Catholic tradition by inquiry. Each college requires its undergraduates to take theology and philosophy courses.

Time Out
During St. Xavier High School's mission trip to the Rio Grande Valley and Matamoros, Mexico, David Kelly ('02) takes time from work for something of equal importance-sharing the joy of life with a child in Matamoros. I was fortunate enough to participate in this experience for the past five years.

Eye to Eye
Samantha O'Connor's face says it all: When James Mayzik, SJ, director of the media center at Fairfield University, says Sunday mass at St. Rita's in Staten Island, N.Y., he brings his homilies to the children's level of understanding and paces the aisles with a wireless mike. The children get a lot out of mass and find him to be very approachable.

Amigos, Amigos, Uno, Dos, Tres
That was the name of the song these preschoolers, the children I came to love during my Jesuit Volunteer Corps year in Hillsboro, Oregon, sang at their Head Start graduation. Wearing their very best to celebrate this special day, their smiles hide the hard, impoverished lives they live. What will their futures hold?

"When I was hungry, you fed me . . ."
Román just gave his little brother Javicho the last sip of a cup of soup they shared. These boys, and hundreds of other working children just like them, enjoy a hot lunch daily at the Cristo Rey Center for the Working Child, a Jesuit project in Tacna, Peru, where I served for two years as a Jesuit Volunteer.

. . . so let's meet at the chapel . . .
St. Joan of Arc Chapel on Marquette University's campus is a popular gathering spot in spring, when blooming flowers and budding trees attract students, faculty, and community to this medieval structure. The chapel is central to the campus physically and spiritually.

Pacem in Terris
From left, Rachel Chen, Vanessa Rodriguez, Molly Wagner, and Jack Sheehy, all seniors at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, paid tribute to the victims of the September 11 attack at a prayer service on the campus of the University of San Francisco 10 days after the disaster. They also took part in a 400-person march, accompanied by students from a number of Bay Area high schools, who walked the four miles from SI to USF's St. Ignatius Church, where they prayed for peace.

Solar Astronomy
Vatican astronomer Manny Carreira, SJ, helps Vatican Observatory Summer School (VOSS) student Katherine Vieira of Venezuela observe some interesting features of the sun. Students from all over the world take part in VOSS, held every other summer. It came about in 1986 after Jesuit astronomer Fr. Martin McCarthy wondered, "What more could we do for the Holy See and its mission to explore and share the wonders that are present in this wonderful universe?" From this contemplation the program was born. I was a student of the program last summer.

On Track
Xavier University's Kerry Hils stretches before a run. She runs cross country and competes in NCAA track, although Xavier doesn't have a track team. She is a world-class runner who tried out for the Olympics in the steeplechase competition, a 3,000-meter run that involves jumping over a large hurdle placed immediately in front of a water pit.

Finding God in a Child's Smile
This cute child is from the fine pre-K program at St. Anthony's Parish. Soon our four-year-olds will "graduate" and move on to kindergarten. Their photos and art work decorate many refrigerator doors in Oceanside.

On the Boards
The Fine Arts Department at St. Ignatius in San Francisco staged the Winter One Act Festival last February. Senior Matt Wilka, under the guidance of director Marc Bauman, directed Words, Words, Words starring junior Carolyn Thamkul, senior student body president Bryan Lorentz, and junior Tristan Handeland as caged monkeys forced to type until they came up with Shakespeare's Hamlet.
